ABOUT CLASSIC

Classic Reinvention is the king of shitty movies you've never seen and never will see, but he's made millions off of them. Typical American. Unfortunately, he's burnt out to the point where he can't even watch TV without seeing himself on just about every channel.

It's Getting Awkward is you watching TV through Classics eyes. Witness what tripped him out through 20+ minutes of Nostalgia and What The Fuck, all wrapped up with a tiny red bow we found in some lady's house we broke into.

Now that's awkward.

October First Friday: Emily Carris Reclaimed

October First Friday: Emily Carris Reclaimed

"One hundred thousand slaves, Black or mulatto, work in sugar mills, indigo and cocoa plantations, sacrificing their lives to gratify our newly acquired appetites for sugar, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco--things unknown to our ancestors."

--Voltaire, Essay on Morals and Customs, 1756

Reclaimed is an installation born out of search for self. As a transracially adopted black women raised in modern America my story is incomplete, riddled with gaping holes, a result of malicious neglect and the casualty of power, supremacy, domination, and shame.

This work has been a backroom performance, as I learned new crafts imprinted with the legacy of my ancestors. With their guidance I have created overt, subtle pieces that interweave my experience as their descendent with their stories so often overlooked by today’s craft movement.
-------
Photographer + fiber artist, Emily Carris has a BA in Education and Photography from Eugene Lang College in New York. She holds a Master's degree in photography from UCA in Kent, England. She has exhibited internationally and has worked as photography teacher and museum educator at the International Center of Photography in New York. Emily is the director of The Art Dept and lives in Philadelphia.

The Magic of Storytelling with Tchin

We Are the Seeds of CultureTrust presents: Storytelling and Native American Flute Music Performance by Tchin

In the winter time, the people gather around the fire waiting to hear the stories that they will later tell the next generations. Stories represent various aspects of human life. Often with a touch of humor and vividness, these tales teach us how we should behave, how things came to be and to give thanks for all our blessings.

Tchin is a nationally known artist and educator of arts and culture. Through the art of oral tradition, he tells stories portraying the creation of the world and how things came to be.

In his energizing presentation, Tchin addresses important topics including cultural diversity, music appreciation, and environmental consciousness.

These stories have been passed down through generations and illuminate both young and mature minds. Tchin brings the stories alive with his gift of magic. As part of this program, Tchin will perform and explain the seldom seen or heard courting flute.
